Over the past few years, many couples have noticed the same thing while planning their wedding: the price of gold. And although the price of gold has being going up consistently over the past few years, the price keeps rocketing up! Naturally, this can raise questions when it comes time to choose wedding rings.

But higher gold prices don’t mean fewer options. In fact, for many couples, they’ve opened the door to more thoughtful, flexible, and meaningful choices.

Today’s wedding rings are less about following a single tradition and more about choosing what fits your lifestyle, values, and budget. Sometimes during our meetings we find that people aren’t aware of the differences between gold karats. To know which karat of gold works best for your wedding rings you can consider the below points.

10k gold contains less pure gold, making it:

  • Slightly lighter in colour (in yellow gold)

  • More affordable

14k gold offers:

  • A warmer, richer gold tone (in yellow gold)

  • Over 50% pure gold in the alloy

Choosing 10k over 14k is not about cutting corners. It’s about making an informed decision based on your lifestyle, budget, and how the ring will be worn. For a plain band perhaps you would go for the 14k.

Or perhaps you’d opt for 10k if you wanted to allocate some of the budget to a custom design or gemstones. For hands on jobs or active lifestyles, 10k gold can be an excellent and practical choice.

Alternative metals: titanium and tungsten wedding rings

Another growing area of interest is wedding ring alternatives to gold, particularly titanium and tungsten. These metals are chosen not as substitutes, but as intentional design choices.

A few notes on alternative metals. First, we are unable to custom make rings in alternative metals. Our studio is set up for precious metals and these alternative metals require entirely different tools and equipment. We also cannot set gemstones in alternative metals.

Next, alternative metal rings usually have a minimum width of 5mm and are often not available in finger sizes smaller than 7.

Sterling silver wedding rings: accessible and customizable

Sterling silver wedding rings can be a beautiful and meaningful option for couples looking for more affordable wedding ring options especially when designed thoughtfully.

Silver is a softer metal than gold, which means ring thickness matters. When choosing a sterling silver wedding ring, opting for a slightly thicker band helps ensure durability and longevity for everyday wear. This isn’t a drawback it’s simply a design consideration that allows the ring to age well.

Tarnishing is another important factor to understand. Sterling silver does tarnish over time, but interestingly, rings worn daily tend to tarnish less than those left sitting in a jewellery box. Regular wear naturally polishes the surface, keeping the ring brighter with minimal maintenance.

While the price of silver has also increased in recently, it’s not even close to being comparable to the cost of gold. For couples navigating rising gold prices, silver can offer a classic look at a much more accessible price point.

What is a Carat?

The term “carat” is a word that everyone knows is associated with the size gemstones and diamonds. It’s even one of the four “C’s” of diamonds. But, what is a carat?

The short answer is that a carat is a weight measurement not a dimensional measurement. But, there’s much more to the story that we are going to explore.

The Origin of the Word Carat

The word “carat” comes from the word carob. Historically, carob seeds were used by merchants as counterweights on balance scales. The carob seeds were particularly useful for determining the value of materials involved in the jewellery trade such as diamonds, gemstones and gold.

It’s important to note that the word “carat” is sometimes also used in place of “karat” when referring to gold purity. This can be confusing because karat is a fractional measurement of gold purity and is not a weight measurement. Carat weight measurement and karat gold purity are not the same thing. These terms are not interchangeable.

The Significance of Carob Seeds

Carob trees have a fruit that looks like a brown pea pod.  There is evidence of people using carob pods and seeds for various purposes going back to ancient Greece.

The seeds, also known as carats, have a fairly uniform weight of around 0.2 grams. Historically this relative uniformity was close enough to provide a reliable standard.  They were also easily available so carob seeds became the simplest method of weighing gemstones for trade.

Today, carob seeds are used primarily as an additive in food and as a substitute for chocolate flavouring. Although native to the Mediterranean region, carob trees can now be found all over the world.

How Carats Evolved

The tricky part is that, although everyone used carats as a weight measurement, everyone had a different interpretation of what constituted a carat. The measurement of carats was not standardized. Over the years some countries attempted to standardize the weight of carats within their own region but there were still differences between countries.

The Standardization of Carats

By the late 19th century the need for a standardized measurement became more and more obvious as global trade increased. In 1907, the Fourth General Conference on Weights and Measures established the metric carat as the official unit for measuring gemstone weight. The metric carat is defined as 0.2 grams, which is actually quite close to the average weight of a carob seed.

Finally there was uniformity in the gemstone industry. This standardization made trade much easier worldwide because there was a universally accepted measure.

What is a Carat Visually?

We use common carat size terms casually when we are actually trying to communicate a size. Terms such as a half carat, one carat, two carat, etc. That can make things quite complicated to understand. What does a one carat diamond look like? Why use a weight description when we are really trying to communicate a size description? Below is an image that will help you visualize typical carat weights in diamonds.

Since we know that carats are a weight measurement and not a size measurement, it makes sense that a carat will not translate to an exact dimensional measurement. The only thing that can be established is an average size of a half carat diamond, one carat diamond and so on.

Below is a diagram of the average sizes of four diamond carat weights. These average dimensions are only averages for diamonds. Average sizes correlated to carat weight is much more difficult to establish in other gemstones such as sapphire or emerald.

Carats and Gemstones Other than Diamond

For other gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, emeralds etc., there is no average size that we can correlate to carat weight. This is because other gemstones are usually cut to preserve carat weight. As a result, cutting is much less standardized in gemstones than it is in diamonds.

A gemstone cutter or lapidary may desire to preserve carat weight in gemstones for a number of reasons. If the gemstone is being sold by weight it is within their interest to preserve carat weight. Or, often coloured gemstones will be cut deep to preserve the saturation of colour.

Although there can be a generalized, average size for a one carat within a species of gemstone, the carat sizes can vary wildly within a species of gemstone and between species of gemstones.

From goldsmiths to gem setters, from lapidaries to gemmologists,
this is your guide to the different types of jewellery professionals.

We are lucky in Toronto to have access to such a wide range of jewellery professionals. We know it can be difficult for the average person who is not involved in the industry to understand all of the different specialties. In this article we’re going explore some of the most common jewellery industry professionals and what they do.

We will focus on the jewellery professionals involved in the production of fine jewellery.

History

The working of metal is one of the oldest trades in human history. As the centuries progressed, so did specialization. A blacksmith worked iron and steel into swords and horseshoes. A silversmith worked silver into ornamental items such as candlesticks and plate. A goldsmith worked gold into precious jewellery and sacred objects.

Although it could be said that all of these people could be referred to as metal workers, it is more accurate to define them in terms of their specialties.

In the modern era, the number of specialties in the jewellery industry has increased due to advances in technology. But also because, in our ever more busy world, it just isn’t possible for one person to do everything.

Goldsmith

As mentioned above, goldsmithing is one of the oldest trades. As methods and skill became more refined during medieval times, the apprenticeship system emerged as the main method of passing on knowledge. The apprenticeship model is still an option but there are also now trade schools that teach goldsmithing. We are graduates of the George Brown Jewellery Program which we highly recommend!

The training to become a Goldsmith includes learning to work and manipulate all precious metals. Despite not be included in the profession title, a goldsmith works with all noble metals including silver, gold and platinum. A goldsmith education will also include basic gemmology instruction, stone setting, wax carving, mold making and casting.

A good way to think about a goldsmith is as the “general practioner” of jewellery. They will often have another jewellery specialty or two in addition to being a trained goldsmith.

Hand Engraver

A hand engraver is trained in the art of engraving in metal. And it truly is an art. A master hand engraver will often create intricate patterns of their own design. Learning to use steel tools to delicately carve into the metal without making a mistake is quite a skill!

The labour and skill required to hand engrave is immense. It is not surprising then that it is much more expensive than designing an engraved pattern in the computer or using a laser for engraving.

Gem Setter

As the title suggests, a gem setter specializes in setting gemstones into mountings such as rings, pendants and earrings. A gem setter is also usually a trained goldsmith but focuses on the part of the process that involves gem setting. This is a skill that requires many years to master.

There are also many different types of gem setting and each one requires different methods. Knowledge of gemology is also a must.

Gem setting is a skill that requires time, focus and precision. For that reason some goldsmiths will choose to specialize in gem setting and leave the overall production of the jewellery pieces to someone else.

Casting

Casting is the process of taking a jewellery piece from a wax model to metal. While some goldsmith’s will have their casting facilities in house, many choose to use a casting house. The process of casting is very time consuming with many steps. It also requires a lot of energy use so it makes sense to use a facility instead.

All major cities will have a casting house. We have multiple excellent choices available to us Toronto.

CAD Artists

A new jewellery professional has arisen in the 21st century. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software like Rhino is used in a wide variety of industries to construct digital models. In the jewellery industry CAD artists use this computer program to design a model of a jewellery piece.

Once the piece has been created, the file of that item is used to print a model in wax. This wax model is then used in the casting process to create an exact replica of the original design.

While some may regret the loss of traditional techniques, CAD has allowed for an explosion in custom options. Whereas in the past the labour involved in some designs may have been too cost prohibitive, CAD now allows us to create with freedom.

Jewellery Designer

The title jewellery designer is a catch all term that does not describe any particular specialization.  The category is just too wide to be helpful. A person may call themselves a jewellery designer with absolutely no training in jewellery whatsoever.

We include it here because it can be sometimes used to describe jewellery professionals such as goldsmiths creating custom jewellery or CAD artists. It is essential that the designer of a piece of fine jewellery has been trained as a goldsmith. When using expensive metals and precious gemstones, the piece must be well designed and constructed to last. You don’t want the piece falling apart or the gemstone falling out!

Watch Makers

Horology is another trade with a significant and storied history. While broadly placed under the category of jewellery, watch making and repair requires an entirely different type of education and training. It is also often associated with the tool and dye trade.

Enamellist

An enamellist is someone that works with glass and metal. Jewellery professionals that specialize in enamel will have a lot of colour in their work. This colour is glass that has been incorporated into their design.

An easy way to know if someone is an enamellist is if their work includes a colour that is not produced by either metal or gemstones!

Lapidaries

Lapidaries specialize in working with gemstones. Their expertise is in cutting, shaping, and polishing precious stones.  The more complicated the cutting required for a gemstone, the more skilled the lapidary required. For example, a facetted gemstone requires much more expertise than a cabochon (rounded stone with no facet edges).

A lapidary may go to school for training or learn as an apprentice. Precision and skill are the hallmarks of this profession and they require years to master.

Gemologists

Gemologists are trained to identify, grade, and assess gemstones. Education in gemology is available in some post secondary schools. But, certification is issued only after testing is completed successfully by a recognized institution such as the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (GEM-A) or the Gemology Institute of America (GIA).

A gemologist could seek a job outside of the industry but many choose to become jewellery professionals such as appraisers or gemstone suppliers.

One of the benefits of working directly with one of these jewellery professionals is that you know they are an authority in their field. In a corporate retail jewellery space, most of the individuals you will encounter do not have the expertise or training of a professional. By speaking with a person with experience and training, you can be confident that you are receiving accurate information.

In addition to accurate information you can ensure that the piece you are making will be designed properly, using quality materials, and finished & set skillfully to last a lifetime.

First, the most important thing to understand is that gold vermeil, gold plate and gold fill jewellery is not gold jewellery. Pieces of jewellery that use these descriptions are typically costume or semi-precious pieces.  While they all incorporate a gold colour into their design, these pieces are not made of solid gold and the terms denote different processes. We wanted to explore the differences between gold vermeil, gold plate, and gold fill jewellery in this post because we find many of our clients are confused by the terminology. It’s also important information to know so that you can make informed decisions about your purchases.

Gold Vermeil Jewellery

Gold vermeil, pronounced “ver-may,” is a term that denotes a specific type of gold plating process. To qualify as vermeil, the jewellery must meet certain criteria:

  1. The base metal underneath the gold plating is sterling silver.
  2. The thickness of the gold vermeil jewellery is thicker than typical gold plated pieces, usually 2.5 microns.
  3. The purity of the gold plating that is used to plate gold vermeil jewellery is usually 10-24 karats but typically 14k or 18k.
  4. Because gold vermeil jewellery is plated with a thicker layer of jewellery it will take longer for the plating to wear away.
  5. Because gold vermeil has a base of sterling silver the jewellery will be stamped 925 or STER or Sterling or similar

Gold vermeil is a good option if you want the colour of gold in your jewellery without the gold price tag. Be prepared, however, for the gold plating to wear off over time. The amount of time it will take depends on how often you wear the piece. If you wear it daily while showering, sleeping, etc., the plating will wear off quicker. If you find that the plating has worn off your favourite piece it is possible in some cases to have it re-plated. An exception would be chains, it is very difficult and not advisable to re-plate chains.

Gold Plate Jewellery

Gold plating is a common technique used to coat a base metal with a thin layer of gold. Key features of gold-plated jewellery include:

  1. The base metal under the gold plate can be anything including copper, brass or “white metal” which is what costume jewellery is usually made from
  2. The thickness of the gold layer in gold plated jewellery is usually much thinner than in gold vermeil or gold fill jewellery, usually 0.2-0.5 microns
  3.  Gold plate jewellery can use any karat of gold for the plating process but is typically of a lower karat
  4. The type of jewellery that is gold plated is usually very inexpensive
  5. Gold plate jewellery may or may not be stamped. If there is a stamp it will have the gold karat number followed by letters such as GP, GE, GEP or HGP standing for (GP) Gold Plate, (GP & GPE) Gold Electroplated, (HGP) Heavy Gold Plate, ie: 18k GP

Gold plated jewellery is not as durable as gold vermeil or gold fill jewellery and will start to wear quickly. As it begins to wear away you may begin to notice skin reactions as the thin layer of gold is no longer providing a barrier between your skin and the low quality metal underneath. It’s best not to invest too much in this type of jewellery as it has a limited lifetime of wear.

Gold Fill Jewellery

Gold fill jewellery is a step up in terms of quality and durability compared to gold plate. Here are the key characteristics of gold fill jewellery:

  1. The metal underneath the layer of gold in gold fill jewellery is usually brass
  2. The layer of gold is chemically bonded to the brass core resulting in a much thicker layer of gold. The gold content of gold fill jewellery is between 5-10%
  3. The purity of the gold in gold fill jewellery can be 14-18k but 14 karat is the most common
  4. Because the gold is chemically bonded to the brass core it makes the jewellery piece much more resistant to wear and tarnishing.
  5. Gold fill jewellery will typically be stamped with the gold karat number followed by the letters GF, 1/20th 12k, 1/20th 14k or 1/10th 10k

Gold fill jewellery is usually a bit more expensive than gold vermeil or gold plated jewellery but it’s still a very affordable option. It’s probably your best option if you’re looking for the colour of gold and durability at a reasonable price point.

Understanding the differences between gold vermeil, gold plate and gold fill jewellery is really important so you can make informed purchasing decisions. Usually the price will tip you off right away. If you’re looking for some fun fashion jewellery then we recommend either gold vermeil or gold fill as long as you are ok with the idea that they will eventually show wear.

If you’re looking to start your permanent jewellery collection with a piece you can wear everyday, there really is no replacement for real gold. It’s more expensive but it’s worth it for a forever piece.

Garnet Gemstones: More than Just January's Birthstone

Why I Love Garnet

My dad was born in January. He wasn’t really a winter person and I don’t think he much liked having his birthday during the cold months. But one thing he did seem to like was his birthstone. He had a yellow gold and garnet ring that he wore all of the time.

The wear and tear of everyday life slowly started to soften the facet edges of the stone. But rather than make the ring less beautiful, I feel like the wear made the ring even more special. It was like the ring experienced the same life and took it in. I love that ring.

So I’ve always had an appreciation for garnet gemstones. But once I became a jeweller I found an even greater appreciation. I had no idea of all of the varieties and colours of garnet!

But isn’t garnet just a deep red, you say? Oh no, there’s much more to this stone than the classic colour we all have in our mind. Let’s have a closer look together.

What is a Garnet?

Garnet gemstones are actually a group with many sub species. They are all very similar minerals but have slightly different chemical compositions and are grouped together because their crystal structures are so alike. Most varieties are very common and are found all over the world. But there are also some very rare kinds of garnets that are pretty fascinating.

Typically the subspecies of garnets are split into two groups. Pyrope, almandine and spessartine form one group and grossular, andradite and uvarovite form the other.

Pyrope and almandine garnet are typically what we think of when we think of garnet, a stone ranging in hue from reddish brown to deep red to reddish purple. Spessartine is rarer and can range in colour from deep red to orange-red to orange. A true orange is the most prized colour.

Garnet Gemstones Used in Jewellery

Mozambique Garnet

I would wager that Mozambique garnet is what most of us think about when we think about garnet, that deep, dark red colour. Whereas most people would just call this “garnet”, jewellers call these garnets Mozambique garnets in order to distinguish them from other varieties. Obviously some of the most prized samples of this kind of garnet come from Mozambique.

Mozambique garnet is most often a combination of the pyrope and almandine varieties of garnet.

This is the traditional colour on the birthstone lists. But, if you’re not a fan, keep reading!

Rhodolite Garnet

Rholodite garnet is one of my favourite garnet gemstones. It’s from the pyrope group of garnets and the colour can range from reddish pink to pink to reddish purple. I call them raspberry garnets.

I have this rhodolite garnet that I’m planning to make into a stunner of a cocktail ring!

Spessartine Garnet

Spessartine garnet is one garnet,  I will admit, I have not had much experience with. They are from (you guessed it) the spessartine group, are found all over the world and tend to be coloured in the red to orange to yellow spectrum.

What I find most interesting is the category of blue pyrope-spessartine garnets that are colour change stones. Colour change garnets change from blue-green to purple depending on the colour temperature of the light. All colour change stones are very rare and usually much more expensive.

Hessonite Garnet

Hessonite garnet is typically found in orange hues ranging from orangey-yellow to orangey-red. Sometimes it’s called a cinnamon stone. A hessonite garnet is from the grossular sub species of garnets.

I’ve had a few really pretty hessonite garnets over the years. I still have one that I’ve been mulling over ideas for but haven’t quite had the time to make into something.

Tsavorite Garnet

What in the heck is tsavorite and, more importantly, how do you pronounce it? The answer to the first question is it’s a green garnet from the grossular garnet group. The answer to the last question is, just drop the “T”.

It was first discovered in the Tsavo region of Kenya, hence the name. Sometimes it has been used in place of emerald due to it’s similar brilliant green and because tsavorite is less brittle than emerald, although less hard. High quality tsavorite is not always a less expensive choice than emerald. It’s actually 200 times more rare than emerald.

Demantoid Garnet

This is my other favourite garnet. Partly because of the name and partly because it’s so sparkly.

Demantoid garnet is the green variety of andradite and is very rare. It has a very high refractive index meaning it has a similar play of colour to diamonds. It is also slightly magnetic due to the iron content.

I have a pair of green demantoid garnet stud earrings in the shop that I set in 14k green gold that I just love. I think that’s the key. Make sure you love everything you make so that if they never sell you have a wonderful jewellery collection one day!

Lab grown diamonds, also known as lab created, lab made or man made diamonds, are chemically identical to natural diamonds. They have the same durability and sparkle but not the same price tag!

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes! Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. A laboratory grown diamond is physically and chemically identical to a natural diamond. The only way to detect the difference between them is with highly specialized equipment.

The answer to if the average Joe or Jane can detect the difference between a natural and lab created diamond is a definite no. Most jewellers and gemmologists can’t tell the difference either, not without that specialized equipment I mentioned. Lab diamonds are equal to natural diamond in quality, durability and sparkle.

What's the difference between a lab diamond and a diamond simulant?

The short version is that a lab diamond is a genuine or “real” diamond and a diamond simulant is not. A diamond simulant is something such as cubic zirconia which is used to mimic the look of a diamond but at a much lower cost.

Unfortunately, although beautiful, cubic zirconia is not durable enough to stand up to everyday wear. Within months the facet edges will start to abraid and the surface of the gem will start to look “foggy”. This will not happen with a lab created diamond because, since it is identical to a natural diamond, it is just as durable.

It is also important to note here what we mean when we say “synthetic diamond” versus diamond simulant or imitation diamond. A synthetic diamond is a lab created diamond. It is identical to a natural diamond but made in a lab so it can be called synthetic.

A diamond simulant or imitation diamond is not a diamond. As we discussed above this would be something like a cubic zirconia that is meant to look like a diamond but is not a diamond.

How much do lab grown diamonds cost?

Initally lab diamonds were about 30% less expensive than natural diamonds. Recently, however, the cost of lab created diamonds has decreased even further due to competition in the market and improvements in production. Today you can expect to pay between 30-40% less for a lab made diamond. You could also look at it at as getting a larger lab created diamond for the same price as a smaller natural diamond.

Are lab grown diamonds graded the same as natural diamonds?

At first lab grown diamonds were mostly only available in larger carat weights. But now smaller melee (small accent sized diamonds) are available in a range of sizes and shapes. The most accessible shapes for melee are round, pear, straight baguette and tapered baguette.

It can still be difficult to find some of the rarer or unusual shapes such as trillion, marquise or kite in a lab created stone. This is especially true with the small melee stones.

It is possible to have a lab diamond custom cut to your specifications but this can easily add thousands to the final cost. I am finding more and more variety available as the demand for lab created diamonds increases so it may just be a question of waiting until the suppliers can catch up with the demand.

How are lab grown diamonds made?

So how does one go about growing diamonds? Lab diamonds are created in one of two ways.

The first is called High-Pressure High-Temperature or HPHT. Did you know lab diamonds were around in the 1950’s? Companies were actually using this HPHT process back then to create lab diamonds to use for industrial purposes. They were not as focused on producing gem quality diamonds for the jewellery industry.

As you may have guessed this process uses extreme heat and extreme pressure and applies it to a natural diamond seed. This simulates the extreme environment that causes natural diamonds to form.

The second process is called Chemical Vapour Deposition or CVD. This method was also around in the 1950’s but it’s only recently that it has become as viable the HPHT method. CVD also starts with a natural diamond seed which is placed in a chamber then subjected to high temperatures. Following this a combination of hydrogen and methane is released into the chamber which causes the electrons to separate and actually frees the pure carbon atoms which then deposits onto the diamond seed.

Are lab grown diamonds available in all sizes?

All lab grown diamonds are graded according to the “4 C’s” just as natural diamonds are, ie: colour, clarity, cut, carat. However, lab diamonds receive a different report than natural diamonds. All lab created diamonds will come with a report that states they are lab grown and this information should also be laser inscribed on the girdle of the stone.

Fun fact, you can even get a custom personalized message inscribed on the girdle of your diamond!

Are colours other than white available in lab grown diamonds?

Yes, coloured lab diamonds are available but they are harder to find. As with the shapes, it is a question of the time needed for the supply to increase in order to meet the demand. Because the most popular colour of lab diamond is white, that it the colour that is most produced.

Where can I purchase a lab grown diamond in Toronto?

There are a number of websites that offer lab grown diamonds for purchase. If you decide to purchase your lab grown stone online we can work together to create the ring. The only trouble with purchasing a diamond online is that you can’t see it in person which often can make a big difference. I also have access to a number of lab diamond suppliers and I’m happy to bring stones in for you to choose one in person.

Should you choose a lab grown diamond for your engagement ring?

Ultimately, of course, only you can answer this question.  Personally I feel lab grown diamonds are in every way as beautiful as natural diamonds but with two significant differences.

The first is the price point which, as we’ve discussed, is much lower than a natural diamond. The second is that a lab made diamond is conflict free and has a much lower environmental impact than a mined diamond. If you have your heart set on a diamond, and either of these factors are important to you, then I say go for it! You won’t be disappointed.

If you’re still on the fence then the way I work will, I think, make it easier. If you’ve never seen a lab diamond before I can bring some in to the shop so you can see them in person. I can even source out the shape and size you’re looking for so you can visualize what it will look like on your finger.

And unlike in the creation of these diamonds there’s no pressure. If the options are not what you were looking for we can always return them and try something else. This is really about finding out what’s right for you.
